Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day is one of a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States. Americans of all religions celebrate this day with big dinners and family reunions. Thanksgiving Day is a time to remember all the good things in life and to be thankful.
Thanksgiving Day in America was founded by the Pilgrims. They were are group of English settlers who came to Massachusetts in 1620. The Pilgrims came to America because they wanted religious freedom. Their first winter was difficult. And many of the Pilgrim died. But the following year, the corn harvest was good. The colonists also got a big harvest of barley, beans and pumpkins. And there was celebration for three days as a harvest festival. That was the first Thanksgiving on American continent. In following years many of the colonists celebrated the harvest with a feast of thanks. After the United States gained independence, Congress recommended one yearly day of thanksgiving for the country. Later, George Washington suggested the date November 26 as Thanksgiving Day. Then, after the Civil war, Abraham Lincoln suggested on the fourth Thursday of November to be the day of thanksgiving.
Almost in every culture in the world there is a celebration of thanks for rich harvest every year. They are: Moon Festival in China in Mid-Autumn, Chuseok in Korea on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, Dongmaeng in Japan, Dozynki in Germany on first Sunday in October, Harvest festival in United Kingdom, Tigh Molaige in Irish in August, Thanksgiving Day in Canada on the second Monday of October.
